What’s Going On in My Yard?

What does my lawn need now?

Lawns will benefit from regular fertilization and broadleaf weed control especially for those harder to control weeds such as thistle and clover.  As the temperatures rise, remember to water longer and less often to encourage the roots which will help maintain a healthy lawn. Mowing at the 2 1/2 "-3" height is recommended. Also, now is the time to watch for possible insect damage on the lawn from grubs and billbugs.

How can I check my lawn for grubs?

The easiest way to check your lawn for grubs is to do the "tug" test.  In the brown area of the lawn, grab a fistful of the grass and pull - if it comes up easily the problem might be grubs.  Sometimes you can see the insects, they are white/grey and are C-shaped.  The best place to find them is between the brown area and the still green area of the grass. If the roots are still attached and the grass is harder to pull - most likely it is a watering issue.  If a lawn does get droughted in an area it often takes up to two weeks for the lawn to green back up.

What about my trees?

Many of the insects are currently active such as aphids, leafminer, black vine weevil, mites. Call our office if interested in tree spraying estimates.

Can my trees be pruned during the summer?

Yes. For many of the trees, once they have leafed out  or have finished blooming , it is fine to prune trees during the summer.

My weeds are starting!

If you have weeds and or grassy weeds starting in driveways, sidewalks or other bare areas, roundup and other pre-emergents can often be applied to help.

When should I spray for spiders around my home?

The best answer is when they are active.  During April and May,  the eggs are hatching and the new spiders start to become active.   During the summer, spiders will be in and out of homes. In the fall, many of the adults will come inside to look for places to winter.
