What’s Going On in My Yard?
What needs to be done for the lawn to prepare it for spring?
When the snow melts and temperatures start to rise, our lawns will begin to come out of dormancy. Because of the heavy snow fall this year, there may be areas of snow mold, especially in areas where larger piles of snow have been. If you see the grey/white webs on the lawn, just lightly rake areas to help dry out the soil and let air circulate.
Lawns will benefit from a good spring cleanup. A short mowing to remove thatch is recommended. Many customers also prefer to have aeration done in the spring. Aeration helps control thatch, improves soil structure, improves root system, helps to create growth pockets for new roots and opens the way for water and fertilizer to get to the root zone of your lawn.
What should I do to help my trees in the spring?
For most trees and shrubs, spring is an excellent time for dormant pruning. Pruning helps the overall health of the plants by removing the dead or diseased wood to allow better growth. Well maintained trees and shrubs add value to your landscape.
Cleanup of old dead leaves is recommended especially around aspens, lilacs, and crabapples.
